activities03:LOOM BAG PROJECTS

A project to create new locally made products in order to support restoring Minamisanriku town.
-Bag Project –
Bags that are created by local people of Minamisanriku town with a theme of the traditional Tanabata Festival (Star Festival). The two bright white lines are weaved in the bag to represent the wishes and hopes to revitalize the hometowns and people in Northeastern Japan.
The new bag will be launched this September and be available at a couple of major retail stores in Tokyo, Japan. More detail will be announced as the event nears.
Tanabata Festival, held in Sendai, is one of three great festivals in Japan. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively) that happens only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. Both stars are the bright white stars shinning in the sky.

“In the middle of the night on March 11, 2011, finally the tsunami alert went off and the snow that was falling from the evening stopped. With no electricity, the night was so dark and the sky was full of stars. The stars shinning brighter than ever in the night sky was the most memorable thing that happened that night for the children. While evacuating at school and longing for their family to pick them up, the children as well as others were wishing upon a star. Wishing for the safety of their family, friends, and loved ones with a hope to meet them again.”
